Newsvine - Exotic Pet Startles Calif. Investigators

Lately, exotic animals have become the latest accessory for individuals who have money. Remember that Michael Jackson owned a giraffe while Paris Hilton owns some exotic animals herself. So it was not a surprise for me when I stumbled across this article that came from Riverside, California. Police were searching the home of 29-year-old Norman James Vollan for drugs when an exotic animal frightened investigators. They reported the animal as "sloth-liked." Kyle Chang, a Fish and game official, identified the animal as a coatimundi, usually found in Central and South America. Since this animal is illegal to process in the state of California, the animal will be sent to live in a zoo or another animal sanctuary. I think the best part about this article is that Vollan was indeed arrested for poccessing methamphetamine, but at jail officials reported he was crying when he had learned he lost his coatimundi. I think he has more important things to cry about, like maybe being arrested for drug procession and going to jail?

Here are some links to copy and paste to view pictures of coatimundis (in case you were curious like me!):

I completely agree with Morgan on the fact that maybe this man's priorities are a bit off. The drug problems and getting arrested should be a bit more upsetting than having your pet taken away, but I guess some people's pets are really important to them. I mean think of a movie or a story where a puppy dies. Half the time the audience seems to cry more over the dying puppy than anything else. It's weird how some people's priorities are lined up. Also, why did he even have this exotic animal in his home in the first place? That's terrible to lock up a living thing which shouldn't even be kept there. I've just heard horrible things about people buying exotic animals such as this coatimundi and then failing to take proper care of them. What a weird story this was.
